Consequences of Extra Year of Eligibility Could Be Far-reaching

This week the NCAA granted all winter athletes an extra year of eligibility. I am surprised there has not been more discussion of the potential consequences of this. The little discussion I have seen has focused on current seniors. UCONN Women's Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma, for example, who opposes the rule change, says that it could create awkward scenarios where a senior wishes to remain for another year, but the coach is ready for the player to move on.

The ripple effects, though, could extend far beyond current seniors. Coaches plan their rosters, recruiting, and scholarships with the expectation that players have five years to play four seasons. All of this year's active players, not just seniors, now have six years to play five seasons. This midstream change will require coaches to adjust their planning to account for players who might stay for an additional season beyond previous expectations. Will Hauser or Huff stay? Will Kihei play three more seasons? Will the class of '24 (currently, Beekman, McCorkle, Shedrick, and Abdur-Rahim) become the class of '25, which could help to compensate if the actual recruited class of '25 does not meet usual standards? The "Scholarship Picture" page on this site now becomes uncertain.

It also creates uncertainty for recruits regarding playing time and how long upperclassmen might be "ahead" of them on the depth chart.

It's possible that, when the dust settles, this could benefit UVa. After all, experience is one of the most vital ingredients to UVa's success. Kihei in his fifth year could run circles around young ACC guards. Someone like, say, Kadin Shedrick could be a beast after six years training in the program.

It will be fascinating to see how it shakes out.
