I agree with all that

2017 was a bad situation that ended up getting compounded by what I think was Bennett's worst season of roster management.

Not to dig up the past too much but Shayok was the root of most of our roster issues - he was just a bad teammate on the floor (he may have been awesome on the bench/locker room so I won't say bad teammate in general). He hogged the ball, did not take good shots in our offense, was bad at defensive rotations and had a knack for turning the ball over in the mid-court when he was given any kind of ball-handling responsibility. As an individual scorer and individual defender he was really good, but when it came to making your teammates better he couldn't do it. No court vision.

But he was so undeniably talented and looked so great that some of the coaches fell in love with him. What he needed was not minutes but hard coaching to get rid of all his bad habits, even if it meant he was going to transfer out to a better system for his style of play (which happened anyway). The only player I think who got more rope for constant mistakes was Perrantes, and Perrantes at least earned a lot of the rope he got.

Thompson, OTOH, could have gotten a lot of Shayok's minutes and might then have stayed another season, and he would have filled a big hole in the 2018 roster that was instead taken up by square peg Nigel Johnson.
