At the little league park you may hear some dad

Yell “you’re up 0-2, you can waste one here.” You don’t want to do that. The pitch should have a purpose but that doesn’t mean it has to be a strike.

A good example was late in the game, Wilson started the batter with a curve ball that started in and broke over the plate followed by a two seemer that started over the plate and move in to go up 0-2. The batters now conscious of the inside pitch. The 0-2 pitch was in off the plate. In that scenario the 4 options are a swing and a miss, a jam shot to short, a ball or a barreled up ball that he can’t keep fair. You’ve also got him setup for a fastball up and away or a curve ball down and away that he can’t do anything with.

Batters sometimes tend to get over protective and will swing at a ball to avoid strike 3. A lot of time pitchers will try to get too cute and the pitch does end up being wasted but that’s better than leaving one over the plate and giving up your advantage.
