GMU Didn't produce them

They both joined the faculty there and Smith did his Nobel work before he joined the GMU faculty. FWIW, Georgetown has one winner of the prize on their faculty who, likewise, was not a product of GU programs.

Most of the American prize winners are products of Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Stanford and Cal-Berkeley. Interestingly ,in the world of economics, UVA was once known as the Chicago of the East - GMU seems to want to move that much further into the free market end of the continuum.

GMU is joined at the hip with the American Enterprise Institute and one of the GMU honorees (Buchanan) with the prize is well known for his Center for Public Choice (which he moved to GMU from ... wait for it ... VPI!).
