Day 2 of virtual trial in the books
Today’s glitch was the court reporter (for non law Hoos, the court reporter is responsible for recording everything each witness says, everything the judge says, and everything the attorneys say, so extremely important to the process and also for appeal purposes) had a problem with her WiFi because she is home schooling. Which I totally understand but millions hang in the balance so we need her to be able to create a record of EVERYTHING that is said. Her initial virtual video/audio feed was a “can you hear me now commercial.”
Her firm tried to find another to take her place without success. Thank goodness she logged off, made her kids go play outside, rebooted her WiFi and we were able to proceed. But the process took 40 minutes.
Then we had the issue of a witness for the opposition log in on an iPhone. The witness was presented with exhibits that were too big for the iPhone. But it was the opposition’s witness so we basically destroyed her.
If this is the new normal for trials, thank goodness retirement is visible on the horizon.
