It's probably not so much Nike...
A creative agency is going to go off of what its client wants, with some creative flexibility. People seem to love what Nike does with Baylor and Oregon - maybe a little loud for some, but at least very creative.
If we've gone super conservative with less focus on certain colors, etc, it's because the client's asking for it...
A creative agency can only deliver what's been briefed... and full transparency - I'm not all anti-Carla or the athletic department by any means - I love seeing the success of our athletic programs, so I measure less based on fund-raising efforts and logo redesign efforts. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the athletic department and am not as anti-logo/anti-uniform as many here are.
But as a marketer myself, and someone who has created and launched a lot of brands for billion dollar companies and for myself -- no brand redesign, no logo redesign, etc happens without signoff and direction from the client.
