Re: Wow. Didn't know about Sanchez. Might be a good move for him.

Manfred doesn't get that baseball is largely a local sport played on a national stage.

The sport is rooted in local communities beginning in little league up to high school and then American Legion ball.

College and minor league teams are big parts of their local communities as well, especially when there are no nearby professional teams or other things to do during the spring and summer.

It's also affordable, fun, family friend entertainment that has multi generational ties.

The same is true for summer league teams.

Follow a minor league team, a summer league team, or an entire summer league account on Twitter. The level of community engagement and connection is off the charts.

Do minor league players in small towns ever live with host families? I know they do in summer baseball leagues. That arrangement further enriches the team-community connection.

Even MLB is really a locally focused endeavor. Give a fan the choice of listening to their team's radio broadcast / local market television broadcast versus the national broadcast on ESPN, MLB Network, or Fox. The national broadcast will get routed.

There are very few MLB teams with a truly national following - Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, and possibly the Cardinals and Braves I'd argue.

Manfred seems to think baseball fans are just watching MLB on Fox, ESPN, and MLB Network and no other levels of baseball. The mythical fan in Manfred's eyes is just as happy watching the Rangers and Padres play as long as the game is distilled to a two and a half hour television experience as they are taking their family to watch the local guys they have personal connections with or the closest MLB team on the local broadcast who they invite into their home nightly over dinner.
