Two fold...

It's a cost extra month or two to house the players isn't free (plus ancillary costs related to housing / feeding players). In a normal time, that's not a big deal to your bigger schools. But the bottom third or so of D1 would be hit hard cost wise.

You'd cleave the sport into a FBS/FSC type arrangement according to Coach O'Connor due to the higher costs (and he supports the modified schedule but doesn't think it will garner the support necessary).

To a smaller extent, the programs in the Sun Belt and southwest have little interest in leveling the playing field for the northern schools. The northern schools would stand to benefit the most from the better weather found in a season starting later (more home games, less travel, probably easier recruiting).
