Yep. This is one of the many horrible results of the antitrust exemption

for baseball.

Contrast with a business subject to antitrust laws - let's say Amazon. Amazon has contracts with many publishers. What if Jeff Bezos just woke up one day and said, "I'm tired of negotiating with Random House - let's just take over the entire publishing industry so we don't have to negotiate anymore. And we can get rid of 40% of the publishers too." It can't happen.

But Justice Holmes decided that there was something "special" about baseball that warranted not subjecting it to the same laws that affect other industries. And the Supreme Court has never seen fit to overrule precedent from one of its titans, even if it is absolute nonsense.

Manfred is a penny-pinching technocrat, not a baseball lover like Bart Giamatti or Fay Vincent or Happy Chandler.

This is going to have repercussions in the negotiation of the new CBA. But more importantly, this shows that the owners learned NOTHING from the 1994-95 debacle that almost ruined the sport and drove millions away. I'm sure the NFL is thrilled at these latest moves by Manfred!
