The Cubs now have the softest tossing rotation imaginable
The three guys who would for sure be in the rotation as of now are Hendricks, who averaged 87.4 mph on fastballs last year, Davies (coming back in the Darvish deal), who averaged 88.6 mph, and Alec Mills, who averaged exactly 90.0. They ranked 141, 153, and 159 among 160 pitchers who threw 500+ pitches this season (and Jon Lester who was with them and might conceivably be back as a free agent was at 143). It's certainly possible that they could go three (four?) games at a time without their starter hitting 90 mph a single time. Very bizarre in this era that is so focused on velocity (though fastball usage has been going down even with all the guys throwing 95+). I haven't entirely figured out what their plan is, bringing Davies back for one year might have just been about money, though he is at least a serviceable ML pitcher despite his lack of stuff. I guess we'll find out when we see what they do with Bryant; if they trade him it will be impossible to argue they're doing anything other than starting a rebuild.
