Yeah, I was ecstatic when virginiasports.com posted that article.
Absolutely NOTHING but good news for the Hoos coming into the 2021 season. Other than COVID spikes, and possibly losing Montgomery and Panzini to the draft. (And losing Bitsko to the 2020 Draft.) But hey, we got Newell to Grounds, and we got Savino to Grounds (and a semester early, bypassing the risk of the draft altogether). Those are HUGE wins. This team is absolutely loaded - pitching is as deep as I think we have ever had, even in those ridiculous years K's strung together either leading the nation in ERA or coming very close; hitting is very deep and we have quite a few players on the bench who can hit for average or power; defense is very, very solid; and baserunning is the best we've had in many years - on top of Kent and Gelof, who were very, very good base stealers in 2019, we had Newell at 8-8, Lebreux at 4-4, and Cotier at 3-3. (Ortiz was 3-3 as well, so the entire infield had between 3 and 6 SBs in about 1/3 of a season, and and 2 of the 3 OFs, with Sullivan at 2-2 and Michaels at 2-2 as well!!!) 34-39 on the basepaths. Jake Gelof, Alex Greene, and Channing Austin all have run sub-7.0 60s, and Addie Burrow ran 6.60. So speed is going to continue to be a strength for at least the next 3 years.
Just praying that COVID doesn't screw this up somehow. I want to be freezing my ass off in The Hook in February. I haven't been to town since fall ball of 2019. This must be how people feel when they're on methadone. I think I'm developing the shakes. I need some damn baseball.
