Why should we?
First it should come down to the players and if they choose that all the additional protocols of the season are too much for them fully support canceling the remainder of the season.
However for fans we should not be rooting for that. Yes the record is going to suck. We could play in the AAC instead of the ACC and the record would suck. Same if we played in the CAA. Be it CTT or someone else (please please please someone else Carla) we need to know what we have in 2021. Are any pieces salvageable to build a team with?
If the trigger is finally pulled on this experiment, a new coach will gain some recruiting momentum just by being new. With a roster constructed as currently is with all the players getting a free year as well, the one thing the new coach is going to have a hard thing selling is playing time over more "experienced" players. Yes you can always recruit over current players but frankly we are better off in that case thinning the herd a bit and letting everyone see (player and coaches) that their future may be someplace else (or just not in basketball at Virginia). Add in the financial concerns of carrying a roster over 15 scholarships and best to figure out what we have so that the pieces that do not fit can see that or be shown that.
The other reality is if we want a new coach it is best to let the current one fail. Now if she can prove me wrong I applaud her. I also will be placing $1,000,000 on Bronco beating Saban in the Natty next year and flapping my arms to fly to Hawaii for my next vacation. To use an old phrase that may be outdated, sometimes you have to give people enough rope to hang themselves with.
While we can certainly buy CTT out if we choose to do so, the issue of hiring another coach comes into play. We will have given a short timeline for CTT with one of those years, should we quit this year, being incredibly limited. For top candidates that will just add to the question about stability here and I think any good agent would be asking for additional years seeing the recent hiring/firing history. As fans, this should concern us seeing as how botched this hire was and now the same people would be hiring now with longer terms and more financial liability. Maybe they hit this time but limited data shows that as not likely.
Again if the players choose to sit this year out from here on out, I stand behind them. However we as fans need to realize taking the bitter pill of seeing likely L's put on the board each time the team hits the court is best for the program as we gain experience, figure out what talent we do have for this coach or the next, and provide more data points to justify a coaching change (or see a miracle in the works). Add in the life lesson of you don't quit, or as I like to call "a really stupid and futile gesture," and I would hope the team finishes its season.
