The rules have been bent very far toward the offense.
The prevalence of pick plays, rub routes, and the refusal to consistently call offensive holding has led to a much simpler game for the offense, and a much harder game for the defense to defend. Most offensive passing plays (especially in college) have no more than 2 options, with every other player on the field setting "picks" or "rubs" to free up the primary targets. Simpler for the QB, simpler for the WR's, simpler for everyone involved on the offensive side. But harder on the defense to defend.
Meanwhile, the defensive backs are getting called for DPI, illegal contact, and holding as they wrestle with the picks and rubs. Not ideal. The DL are getting held on every play and it's nearly impossible to get pressure with 4 down today because the OL can double your best rusher and hold the other 3 guys long enough to run a WR past two "screens."
The game has become basketball on grass, in a very literal sense.
We have reached a point that college football is more analogous to competitive Madden football rather than any version of football played before 2001. If you punt a single time, you lose. If you **ever** kick a field goal, your odds of winning drastically go down. You have to score a touchdown every time out to compete at the highest level of the sport, at this point.
