I used to use Vanguards ST Investment grade fund for this purpose. Haven't
checked the yield on that lately, but you're probably only going to get 1% on that these days.
Not to be too dismissive, but for $5-$10K and yields where they are, it doesn't really matter. It's ~$100 per year difference between the highest and lowest yield you're going to find for anything safe. If you're getting 1% in a savings account, I'd stick with that.
