Yes, his dad retired & went home to Galena Park to enjoy HS football
He knew he would never win anything, and since he left there, Dave turned Northshore into one of the top programs in the country. These are the only schools in the ISD, and are only a few miles apart. When Coach Dickey was growing up there, Galena Park was a power to be feared. That athletic district of Baytown, Pasadena, GP, Texas City, Galveston Ball, & Freeport, was known as the Little SWC. My little HS played non district games against four of those, and they were really tough.
The single most controversial play in Texas High School Football history was in the 1964 State Championship Game at Rice Stadium between Galena Park & Garland. 56 years later, you can walk up to my friend Larry Davis and ask, "Did you catch the ball". All the blood in his body will go to his face, and he'll reply, "Damn sure did".
Coach Dickey wanted to return home and teach youngsters to be men and about football. It was never about winning, but about learning how to be quality citizens. [Post edited by rdm at 01/13/2021 2:14PM]
