Yeah, that's what I meant by indirect. Grew up in the area and picked that
school, or they went to a school without a FB program like VCU, Mary Wash, etc. or lower level, or family member went there connection, etc. I assume a large chunk of UVA fans are not alums.
You just don't really need a connection at all to be a fan of an NFL team. Sure, having grown up in VA, like most areas, fans are heavily weighted to being fans of the local team (WFT), or their rival (Cowboys). But I also see a lot tied to who was good when they started watching seriously. For my generation, as a kid in the 70's, you'll find a lot of Raiders, Steelers, Dolphins fans too, but very few Niners or Bears fans (around here anyway). Those ten years younger, and you'll find many Niners fans.
Probably similar for the NBA too. I'm from the Celtics - Lakers generation. 10 yrs younger, and it's all about Jordan and the Bulls.
