UVA Football: Pro Football Focus Notables From 2020 (EDGE)
A challenging 2020 season on and off the field ended with the University of Virginia football program winning four of its final five games to finish with a 5-5 record. With a new recruiting class in the fold, several transfers officially on the way, and the start of the 2021 Spring Semester on the horizon, the attention is turning to UVA’s 2021 campaign. We will take an in-depth look at UVA 2021 in the weeks to come, but before that here is a look back at 2020 through the scope of Pro Football Focus grades.
Offense: Armstrong Has Good Showing In First Season As Full-Time Starter
In his first season as a full-time starter, quarterback Brennan Armstrong completed 157 of 268 passes (58.5%) for 2,117 yards with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He added a team-high 552 yards rushing and five scores. Pro Football Focus gave Armstrong high marks for his 2020 season performance, naming the redshirt sophomore All-ACC Honorable Mention. Armstrong’s Pro Football Focus grades measured up well on the national and conference levels.
Among all Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks with at least 200 dropbacks, Armstrong had the 12th-best overall offense grade (90.3), the 14th-best passing grade (85.2), and the seventh-highest rushing grade (78.8). Among ACC quarterbacks with at least 200 dropbacks, Armstrong ranked fourth in overall offense grade behind UNC’s Sam Howell (92.3), Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (91.2), and Miami’s D’Eriq King (90.6). His passing grade ranked fourth while his rushing grade was second behind Louisville’s Malik Cunningham.
