Random thoughts (this could be the title of all my posts)
Efficiency. KenPom is still a bit misleading on the headline OEff/DEff numbers, bc of his preseason adjustment. Headline is 33/13 (O/D), but raw is quite a different story: 9/97. If you eliminate the preseason adjustment on Torvik, it has us at 18/72, which I think gives us the best read on where we are. For this to be a really special season, I think that D needs to creep into at least the top 50, and offense into the top 10. I tend to think the SLUs and Drakes and Colgate’s of the world will drop below us once we are a few more games in.
McKoy/Caffaro (backup 5). I’m glad Tony made the switch. McKoy can’t guard the 5, and Papi did better in the backup minutes. He didn’t do great, and you can see the other teams instinct is to take him to the perimeter (vs posting up McKoy), but I prefer the tradeoffs with Papi. Feel a bit bad for McKoy because he’s getting squeezed a bit, but Hauser and Murphy have a lock on ~90% of the 3/4 minutes and McKoy can’t play 5. (Speaking of, I don’t even like the lineup where Sam plays the 5. Defensive liability.) Also, Papi played competently on O when called upon. 1-2, made his FT. We shall see what happens when Shedrick returns. I think I prefer his length and his activeness, but he’s still very raw.
Love watching Sam play offense. He’s got a few 5-6, 7-8 from 3 nights in him, I bet. Even though he’s struggling right now. And hopefully they come against the top of the conference (whoever that might be) and in the tourney.
Very happy for Casey. I’ve been highly critical, but today was good. The big improvement was shot selection. He took smart shots and shot them confidently. They won’t always go down at that rate, but at least he got some positive reinforcement on what’s a good shot for him.
Jay Huff is a monster. Kihei is still a great “closer”. Reece with 3 steals. Oh, and I’m pretty sure Trey is our best player.
