I think he should’ve had his playing partner look at the ball before he

picked it up. If he picked it up at all, it should’ve been to show his playing partner mud on the bottom of the ball, then put it back where it lay. If your playing partner agrees it was imbedded, you don’t even have to call an official over (but you may).

He picked it up without his playing partner or an official looking at it, set it ASIDE, then started poking his fingers in the grass. For all we know his fingers may have made the intention.
