I happened to find a newspaper from last February


There was a letter to the editor that said in part:

"I'm a businessman trying to get back...to Shanghai...China has stopped. Consumption and production of anything, outside of that necessary to keep body and soul together, has ceased. It's as if the beating heart of Chinese production and consumption is having a heart attack. Simplistic media pundit comparisons...completely miss the point...for now the story [is] in the street, it's in the stopped economy."

From anecdotes like these, I wouldn't completely dismiss the notion that the draconian measures employed by China were successful in stopping the spread there, at an unknown cost.
