Seasonality is likely the main driver of high winter cases


You’re looking at it the wrong way. Respiratory viruses peak in the winter in temperature climates. The low temperature/ low humidity conditions improve transmission of the virus. Especially with most social activity moving indoors. The decrease in sunlight and reduction in exercise also lower our immune systems. Cases increase until those most at risk of infection have the virus and then we see the plateau, followed by the rapid fall in the cases.

We’ll see the same pattern next winter. However, with vaccines the peak will be lower.
