In NC it's seen as an up and coming career.
There is a newer charter high school ( excellent from all reports) in Elizabeth City that is focused on preparing kids for careers in many areas of aviation. It's partnered with Elizabeth City State U which began offering degrees in the field. Both are partnered with the local Coast Guard Air Base and it's Aircraft repair/maintenance facility. The employees there are civilian federal employees. Mechanics there make a solid middle class living with good benefits.
