Seems to me there are more offerings of all types than ever before

I don't quite understand what the metric of success is.

Having only a few hundred movies released every year, and most of those in the US from a single cultural viewpoint, in the good old days? Or having many thousands of movies released every year from a globalized film industry?

Ditto for music, books, TV, and just about any other form of cultural expression. Output has exploded. If we think quality has degraded that is based on what? The average movie? The ten best movies? There are so many excellent films being released every year that even film critics have trouble viewing them all, but the average American thinks movies are worse because they only choose to go to superhero movies?

People only get the culture they buy tickets for. And right now most US people want to buy tickets for escapist movies with lots of violence, special effects, a little bit of sex but not too much, obvious villains, and happy endings.
