The measurement is the combination of popularity and replay value


Classics have both. Today's content does not. Only connoisseurs are enjoying the proliferation of content. The general public is simply not interested. And people aren't rewatching superhero movies or reality TV or whatever. It just doesn't happen.

Speaking for myself, I think albums like Mogwai's "As The Love Continues" or Julianna Barwick's "Healing Is A Miracle" do have replay value but I'm not going to pretend for one second that more than one or two of my friends would have any interest in them. But classic rock? Sure!
