Important to note that until 2003, the top 4 seeds had byes into QFinals

Simply not guaranteeing advancement through the first round is a huge difference when it comes to getting to the F4.

2007 UVa, 2008 UNC, 2010 Cuse, 2014 Cuse, Loyola, AND Penn, 2016 Denver and Yale are all teams that were seeded in the Top 4 and lost in a round they wouldn't have even had to play in from 1971-2002. Understandable it just happens less often now than it used to for that reason before you even get into the diaspora of a greater number of talented players on a still limited number of D1 teams.
