I know nothing of lacrosse X & O's...how do you defend that final faceoff?

Obviously, the one scenario that MD needed, actually happened. We lost the faceoff and the MD dude was able to run right down the highway to get a clean look.

In situations like that, is there a way to place a player behind the faceoff to sort of obstruct the clear path the MD guy had, on the chance that he won it clean (which he did) into our defensive half? Are there faceoff plays that are almost like a "prevent defense" if I'm using football parlance?

Again, I know nothing about lacrosse tactics and as someone who watches 4 games per year, I always get frustrated that ESPN doesn't ever spend anytime explaining the game to us casuals. For example, I have no idea what is, or is not, a penalty and I find the substitution rules confusing and what is a long-stick mid vs. a short-stick mid? That said, that game was amazing!
