I keep hoping a young American tennis phenom will just show up

eventually. If much smaller countries with little historical tennis success can produce Nadal, Federer and Djokovic, surely one will develop here eventually. In the fairly recent past some guys like Donald Young were supposed to be future champions, but since Roddick none have arrived.

Years ago I was at BH and asked Boland why so many foreign players were so good at tennis and Americans seemingly less so. He basically said that most of them grew up poor or at below middle class and saw tennis as a way to get out of their less than favorable circumstances. They were all very hungry to succeed and trained harder growing up and even harder at UVA than most American tennis players who usually grew up in comfortable economic circumstances and just did not have the same internal drive or work ethic to succeed. That made a lot of sense to me. We have so many competing youth level sports that choosing tennis (obviously not a 'fun' team sport) playing with but also trying to beat your friends, that choosing tennis and practicing 3+- hours a day assuming you can find someone (often a stay at home mom) to hit with day after day hitting hundreds of balls often in hot weather does not seem to very appealing to the kid or his hitting partner, unless it is a paid tennis pro.
