Thing may have changed, but back then the first thing i would do is


Contest it with the credit bureau saying it is not you. They will check with the collection agency and if they dont respond, it will be removed. Many collection agencies back then did not seem to care about accounts that were paid and would not respond. Not sure if that is still the case. Also none of my sisters debts were medical so that may be different. To me there is no harm in contesting something as "not you" and you may get an easy win. Good luck.
