IMO, this is discussion is a deflection of the real issue. Should the

focus really be on developing perhaps lowly rated recruits into players who can beat Duke, W&M and/or win 5-7 games per year over bad or mediocre teams?

I see UVa football fans falling into basically 2 major groups as follows:
1. Those who are content with last season (5-5) with the definite upside potential of winning a couple more games when everything falls into place including schedule, injuries, etc.

2. Those who believe we should adopt a higher standard for measuring success. For example, beating VT 50% of the time, challenging for the Coastal Division when there are some quality teams in the division and winning at a higher level against quality teams.

For me, I think we should enter each season relatively confident we will show up for games and play well, beat the Hokies 50% of the time, assume we will beat the bad OOC teams on our schedule and finish with a winning record that includes the bowl game. In other words, that is how I felt during the GW "good old days." I don't expect us to beat Clemson or any other similar quality opponent bur fortunately, we play very few of those types of teams. That also means that I don't expect UVa to win an ACC Title and that is fine with me.

IMO, very, very few UVa fans have unrealistic expectations. I haven't read a single comment where someone believes we should win an ACC, NC, dominate VT, win the Coastal every year, etc. So, it comes down to expectations and in that regards, there isn't a wrong opinion. Someone who believes 5-5 is acceptable is entitled to that opinion just like someone who believes we should better than 5-5.

If anyone wants to see an example of truly outstanding player development, check out how Clemson, OSU, Alabama, etc. develops players. They may recruit outstanding athletes but their peer programs recruit the same level of players. Their teams are EXPECTED to compete and win at the highest levels of competition. They play under enormous pressure every game and are taking everyone's best shot, week after week after week. They can't use covid, lack of practice, etc. as an excuse for poor performance! They can't take a game off because they are worn out.

In closing, 5-5 is better than a losing record and I will take it every year if that is the best we can do. Looking at how we played against VT and NCSU, slow starts in many other games and our lack of depth at critical positions, makes me question whether we are performing at the level we should be performing, especially in view of our schedule.
