Great post. IMO the consistency issue was with the bench, not the starters.

The starters played efficiently most of the season (Ohio game excepted). But we always took a huge step backwards whenever we brought anyone in from the bench.

This is omitting the 3 cupcake games and any garbage time:

5 starters (456 possessions): Oeff 1.206, Deff 0.947, Net 0.259 PPP
4 starters (516 possessions): Oeff 1.062, Deff 1.035, Net 0.027 PPP
3 or fewer (330 possessions): Oeff 0.970, Deff 1.081, Net -0.111 PPP

That is just a huge dropoff just from losing any of the starters. And really just about all that dropoff was from any of the Murphy/Huff/Hauser troika. Whether we had Clark+Beekman or only one of them had relatively minor effect on lineup efficiency with the MHH troika (or too low a sample size to say anything).

Murphy+Huff+Hauser (649 possessions): Oeff 1.194, Deff 0.958, Net 0.236 PPP
Only 2 of Murphy/Huff/Hauser (530 possessions): Oeff 1.011, Deff 1.039, Net -0.028 PPP
1 or fewer of Murphy/Huff/Hauser (123 possessions): Oeff 0.868, Deff 1.218, Net -0.350 PPP

We could bring in Morsell or Woldo to spell one of Clark/Beekman without a noticeable hit, so we had a bench rotation of sorts for the guards, but the only sub we could do for any of Murphy/Huff/Hauser that seemed to be effective was bringing in Caffaro for Huff. All other non-starting lineups without Murphy+Huff+Hauser all at once were at best treading water with our opponents, and often losers.

I can't recall a previous Bennett team that was so dependent on having 3 specific starters in the game all at the same time to function. Without effective substitution patterns for Hauser, Murphy or in many cases Huff (because Caffaro was only used about half the time to spell Huff), we were a very fragile team.
