She only played 2 seeds, neither 1 in the Top 10. It's true that she didn't

lose a single set in the tourney, but her path to the championship was flukishly easy. That does not detract from her massive achievement -- a qualifier winning a grand slam is unheard of and it is indeed a great story.

As fantastic as that is, Fernandez's run to the finals was IMHO even more remarkable than Radacanu's. Fernandez beat 3 of the top 5 seeds in the tourney (#3-seeded Osaka, #5-seeded Svitolina and #2-seeded Sabalenka) & a former #1 in the world (Kerber, the #16 seed) -- all in 3 sets. And not only did she beat them, she made the 2 biggest stars in that group, Osaka and Sabalenka, blink (i.e., cave in to the pressure). I think that Fernandez displayed more poise than any unheralded, inexperienced player in the modern era has ever done. (And Chris Evert made a comment to that effect.) Even Borg, whom I saw lose to Niki Pilic in the 4th round at Flushing Meadows in 1973 when Borg was 17, needed some time to achieve that kind of sustained performance.

Fernandez's poise extends beyond the tennis court & that makes her truly unique. Her "speech" (interview) after her defeat yesterday was extraordinary. In a moment of incredible disappointment and obvious distress, she had the presence of mind and empathy to note the strength and resilience of New Yorkers and Americans after 9/11. (Go to the 2:43 of the linked video.) Billie Jean King herself noted that she had never seen anything like this in her life. That a young woman who turned 19 five days ago could be so gracious and could think of others when she was so clearly in agony is truly amazing. As someone once said: "Sports don't build character; they reveal it."
