Melancholy post: I called my long-time UNC friend to congratulate him on

their convincing win, and his wife told me had died several months ago. While sad, I half expected it. He was 96 years old ( much my senior) and in poor health. We had met for lunch in Chapel Hill last year to discuss business and ACC sports. He told me this was likely to be our last meeting.
Nevertheless, I am sad. He was quite a guy. He had been recruited to UNC on a football scholarship as a tackle. After his first year, when WWII broke out, he left school and joined the Navy Air Corp. He spent the war flying off carriers in the Pacific. His stories of Tarawa, Iwo Jima and Okinawa were harrowing. At Okinawa he tried to shoot down the hordes of Kamikaze planes attacking our ships and carriers. He said the Kamikaze pilots were rookies, with no guns, charging mindlessly toward the carriers. They were sitting ducks, but there were too many to shoot all, and he had to avoid getting too close to the ship fire.
He returned to Chapel Hill, where he played tackle for the Holes, opening holes for Choo Choo Justice. He was all conference.
I will miss our meetings and friendly Hoo-Hole banter. The Greatest Generation keeps shrinking.
