Thank you for sharing. My father was on LST-605 which was credited with

shooting down 10 Kamikazis. One of his shipmates told me it was more like 16 or 17. They were left on the beach on Mindoro by the rest of the convoy. (long story) Bad weather so no air cover. No radio contact. No other ships to be seen. Unloaded all night. In the morning a Kamekazi attempted to fly into the open bow doors, but was shot down crashing into 100 octane barrels of fuel which exploded into and over the bow of the ship. 17 injured and 3 dead about 30 feet from my father.

I have linked a video. The landing and the action I have described are shown at 1:49 - 3:29. Note: 1:47-8 is gruesome. My father was in the middle of all of the wreckage that you see after the crash. After the crash an old chief directed him to look over the side. There was a 25-foot gash just below the rail where the plane's engine had separated from the fuselage and hit the ship, about 15-20 feet where my father was standing. There was a videographer on the 605 so some of the footage may have been taken on that ship. This is the short version.

He never talked about it until dementia started to set in.

Thanks again for sharing.
