Anyone that was expecting it to be a Tony Soprano origin story would be disappointed as he really isn’t the central character of the film. It seems to me that Many Saints is actually just setting the table for what they hoped would be a second film that’s really the Tony Soprano origin story.

You’ve got guys like Paulie, Silvio and Big Pussy that are already established members of the crime family. An interesting story would be how Jackie Aprile and Tony Soprano, who are both in high school in Many Saints, ultimately become the Boss and Underboss of these guys over the next 10-12 years after the film ends.

I think that’s the story they’re hoping to be able to tell, but the project may not get greenlit now as this film looks like it’s going to fall short of box office expectations.
