I have always thought that run differential is the most

important team stat in MLB, but it was not necessarily so this year: Here are the playoff teams in order by run differential and their regular season W-L record:

1 Dodgers (269) 106-56
2 Giants (210) 107-55
3 Rays (206) 100-62
4 Astros (205) 95-67
5 White Sox (160) 93-69
6 Braves (134) 88-73
7 Brewers ( 115) 95-67
8 Red Sox (80) 92-70
9 Yankees (42) 92-70
10 Cardinals (34) 90-72

The strangest result is the Yankees with 92 wins but only a 42 RD, yet Somehow they beat out the Blue Jays with 91 wins but with a 183 RD.

Here are the 4 other teams with positive RD's , but who failed to make the playoffs. How the Blue jays failed to make the playoffs with a 183 RD is astounding, especially with the Red Sox and Yankees making it but with much worse RD's:
Blue Jays (183) 91-71
Oakland (56) 86-76
Reds (26) 83-79
Padres 21) 79-83

Then there are the 2 teams with winning records but with negative RD's:
Seattle (-51) 90-72 how can this happen?
Phillies (-11) 82-80
