I think that’s only half right

The “Forrest Bounce” was picking random categories in order to keep the other contestants off balance. The person in control of the board knows the category a split second before the other two and has a small advantage in a fast paced game.

“Hunting Doubles” is the strategy that really matters. Daily Doubles tend to be in the bottom few rows, so players build a little bankroll, skip to the bottom few rows, and then bet a large amount of their bankroll on the Daily Doubles because they know the answers (questions) 90-99% of the time.

“Hunting Doubles” uses the “Forrest Bounce” because they are skipping around categories, but the “Forrest Bounce” alone doesn’t give you a huge edge unless you are Hunting Doubles and willing to go big on them.

There were several people who “Hunted Doubles” before Holzhauer, but it works best when you know all the answers (questions) too so Holzhauer is the most notable.

Arthur Chu and Alex Jacob were two players that used solid game theory to win a lot and gain some notoriety a few years before Holzhauer, but you can find threads online of people Hunting Doubles many years before them.
