anything for a few hundred bucks though -- too much risk of someone expecting much more and suing for malpractice.

I agree, go after them with as strong a letter as possible. But you're implying that a non-lawyer would write something that is "weak and laughable," which is not necessarily the case. (And sometimes letters from lawyers are so ridiculously over-the-top that they cause the other side to lawyer up, and nobody wins -- except the lawyers.)

Another option is to just cc a lawyer. I wrote a letter for my sister and gave her the option of doing that, just to put the company on notice that there was a lawyer behind-the-scenes, but the letter wasn't from me, so I didn't create an attorney-client relationship and didn't run afoul of any prohibitions on unauthorized practice of law. The "Esq." probably reduced the chance that letter went in the trash bin from 95% to 85%! :)
