Tim Martin was more heavily recruited than Warren Martin

and Tim as a freshman actually outplayed Warren as a senior when Drewry Mason (Henry Co.) played Tunstall (Pittsylvania Co.) in the 1980-81 season. Warren Martin was seen as a bit of a project coming out of high but obviously was a very effective player by the time he left UNC (his junior was his best season - averaged just under 10 pts., 6 rebs. a game). Unfortunately it never worked out for Tim at UVA. This is from an article in '83 about Olden Polynice in the New York Times.

"In a moment of insight, Olden Polynice, the 6-foot-10-inch center for All Hallows High School in the Bronx, said recently that he would not be Ralph Sampson's replacement. An eventual successor, perhaps, but never a replacement.

''I can't be like him, or do the things he does,'' said Polynice, who recently accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Virginia. ''All I want to do is find my role on the team and work to be the starting center. But there's only one Ralph Sampson.''

To Polynice, a native of Haiti who came to the United States at age 7, the distinctions between being a replacement and being a successor are clear, as are his reasons for selecting Virginia and, for that matter, taking up basketball.

''I don't think the pressure will bother me,'' he said. ''If I wasn't ready for it, I would have chosen a smaller Division I school. I started thinking about a scholarship in my sophomore year as a way of going to college and saving my parents some money.''

But the center position that Sampson, a 7-4 senior and a four-time all-American, will vacate will not become Polynice's automatically. Although he was the only prep center recruited by the Cavaliers, he must compete with Kenton Eddelin, a 6-7 junior, and Jim Miller, a 6-8 sophomore. Virginia also hopes to recruit one of two highly touted high school centers next year - Chris Washburn, a 6-11 junior from Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, and Tim Martin, a 6-11 junior at Drewry Mason High School in Ridgeway, Va.

If history is any measure, Polynice will rise to the challenge. Used sparingly in his first two seasons, Polynice has now scored more than 1,000 career points. At the end of last season he was named to the all-division team and second team all-city. This year he is averaging 22 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots per game. Tomorrow night, he leads All Hallows (20-6) against Archbishop Molloy (21-3) in the semifinals of the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association championships at Fordham."
