Are we perhaps talking past each other here?
I understand your point of comparing apples and apples, but it would seem that long TDs would have an impact on our defensive stats. I'm thinking that the long TDs given up (for example, in both the UNC and L'ville games) reduce opponents' opportunities for RZ TDs, because they only transit the RZ en route to the EZ. They reduce RZ possessions. As I mentioned above, I think much of it has to do with our defense being far more effective on a compressed field, where we're not as vulnerable to opponents' speed.
