Thanks. Trying to figure out which direction to head next

I was mixing in some interval sprinting with my distance training which I enjoyed, and seems a little more functional for me (the quick bursts with recovery translate to my tennis fitness for example). And I'm not sure I want to do too much distance running because I don't want to erode muscle mass at my age which I've read distance running can do, while sprinting can actually help build muscle.

Will keep running 2-4 mile distances mixed in with some high intensity sprint workouts and try some more 5Ks. I think I made two mistakes in this race. First.... being too close to the front at the start. My chip time was the same as my gun time, but I burned probably 10 seconds just at the start getting going and around the crowd. The guy who finished just ahead of me in the standings actually finished 10 seconds behind me with the gun time, but 5 seconds ahead with his chip time. It seems a better strategy is to hang back, let the crowd disperse and then take off. It's not like I'm going to win the actual race, so it's the chip time that matters. The 2nd mistake, and I think the first change would help with this, is I got off to way too fast of a start. I ran the first two miles in just over 14 and then gassed hard for the last mile. Had I run the first two miles in closer to 15, I think I could have carried that pace for the last 1.1 miles and finished in the 23s. But being mixed in with the melee at the start, I got carried away with my pace.

Overall was a good experience and it felt good to set a goal and train for it.
