50 years after Title IX, it's not doing anything for WNBA players. I just
learned that WNBA teams are required to fly their players on regular commercial airlines....teams are not allowed to charter those nice private jets that NBA teams use for the men players. Washington Post story says that the owner of the New York Liberty was fined by the WNBA for chartering a flight for his team. Title IX just applies to educational institutions, not private businesses like professional sports teams. So in colleges, no school today would dare send their women's teams via any transportation mode---whether plane, bus, whatever---that isn't the absolute equal to what they use to transport the men's players, and of course rightly so. Back in the day, for sure the men's teams flew & women took the bus, or van, as Debbi Ryan noted last week as she recalled how tired she was some nights driving her team back from away games on a UVA van. Today, there's still that difference in the pro leagues. I'm surprised the players haven't made more of a stink about it, but obviously it comes down to the WNBA needing to stay viable & contain costs, until such time that the women's game makes more money.
