This is simply an unusual time in women's tennis.
Serena was the GOAT, but she rarely plays anymore. Barty retired while being far ahead as #1. Now we have Swiatek as the well-earned #1 (I don't see a player out there that I would bet on to beat her on any surface. Below her, there are several on the mend from major injury/illness, such as Krecjikova. Others are getting older and injured, like Mugaruza and Azarenka, still others are up-and coming. But not there yet, like Raducano, Gauff, and Fernandez.
I don't see anything wrong with the rankings system, and besides, it works just like the ATP system.
One thing's for sure...it's given a great opportunity to Collins, and only her health issues have kept her below the top 5.
