The ONLY argument I can fathom for it (and not saying I agree)

Is because the moron voters 70 years ago who didn't put Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb in unanimously set an awful but nonetheless ironclad precedent, which is that since they didn't get it, no one gets it. Like, The Kid is certainly first ballot, 99% worthy, but he's not really any *more* worthy of unanimous than Ted Williams, Mantle, Mays, Seaver, Ryan, etc, so he should be elected at the same "essentially-unanimous" level that they were.

Just working hard to play devil's advocate. Frankly there should be two dozen unanimous Hall entrants through history. The fault partly lies with voters today, but mostly lies with voters 5+ decades ago who set the bar where it is.
