Bennett's PG Legacy at UVA

I was thinking the other day about the PGs CTB has had at Virginia. Jontel was here for Tony's first 4 years, almost all of it as a starter, and London has been for the past 4 years as a starter. With Ty's emergence, he is looking more and more like not only the heir apparent but ready to start on Day 1 next year and hopefully through the next 3.

What interested me is the diversity (so to speak) of the three guys. Jontel was a defensive terror, lightning-quick, and a pass-first (practically pass-only) PG on offense whose only hole IMO was the lack of an outside shot. He was also a fierce competitor, and I loved watching him (kind of like Badger before him) and seeing how he set the tone for the team.

Then came London with his Cali-cool swag, smooth as silk jumper, and solid floor-general skills. Never the defender Jontel was, he has worked hard to make himself more than adequate on that side of the ball. And he has stepped up his scoring approach when we've needed him most. There's a reason why he will hopefully soon be the winningest player in program history.

And Ty is showing us something different. Some things were obvious before he stepped on the court - for example, he towers over most college PGs, meaning he has great court vision and the ability to shoot over just about anyone. But seeing the flair in his game and the ice water in his veins gives me confidence that the team is in good hands going forward.

But another interesting thing is how many differences there are among these three guys. They come from three of the hotbeds of basketball: Hampton, SoCal, and NYC. They are different sizes and bring very different skillsets. CTB is certainly not recruiting to fit a profile, just taking the best player who's willing to buy in to what the program is all about.

Not really anything profound here, just an observation sparked by the different geographic starting points that got these guys to Charlottesville. And they all seem to be really good guys who are great to root for. Yet another reason to be proud to be a Hoo!
