Article doesn't discuss Football much, but gotta wonder if these modest
moves are the gateway drug of sorts to seek some kind of relevance there. There is just so much money on the table in that sport that can fund the dozens of resource-sucking sports that Ivy schools field, but with margins shrinking the more the P5 consolidate power and move toward an even more exclusive model. Meanwhile, P5 schools are taking new conference TV money and investing, and reinvesting, in facilities, operational/travel budgets, and coaching staffs in the non-revs in ways that even the Ivies have to worry they cannot compete with financially forever.
While we're talking about tectonic shifts, I wonder how much of this is reading the tea leaves and positioning to compete in a new "1AA," which would comprise many of the current FCS teams but also 60 or so non-P5 schools currently playing FBS football.
