NCAA allows 12 scholarships max...

Draw a line from home plate to centerfield. The closer you are to this line the more money is spent. Most schools bring in large freshman classes with most incoming players receiving between 20-50% scholarships. They weed them out the first year and the ones that survive will see their money bumped up. Rinse and repeat.

See JMU as a prime example, this is the Mickey Dean model. He'll bring in 8-12 players each year at a minimal rate all of which believe they will be an All American. A small percentage of them will be invited back for their sophomore years. With that said, hard to argue with results on the field.

UVA's problem is that the facilities are horrendous. Without question the worst in the ACC and at least fourth best in the state of Va behind JMU, VT, Radford and probably Longwood. Throw in the fact that the previous staff believed you had to have a west coast zip code to be a ball player and you have a great deal of national travel ball coaches that believe UVA is an afterthought. The best players that staff got (and there were some really good ones) are no longer at the University. Many left on their own accord and some now play at top end Power 5 schools.

Look at UNC...while there are some western players a great deal of their core is from this region and many played for the same travel ball organization (Carolina Cardinals). Same goes for VT with a connection to several organizations including the Williamsburg Stars. How does JMU (and Radford before that) become a national power? Look no further than the Beverly Bandits travel ball organization based in Chicago. Dean has gotten the best of the best from this group for over a decade and places his local recruits with this organization so they can play a high level of ball throughout the summers during high school. Radford has somewhat lost that connection with Dean at JMU but now has a connection to the travel organizations in the Atlanta area and specifically the Georgia Impact (top org in Georgia) through Morales being an all-American at GT.

So ask me how does Radford beat UVA???
Radford's starting lineup consisted of 3 Beverly Bandits, 3 from the Georgia Impact and a Carolina Cardinal. You do the math.
