Not that I'd leave bear spray in my car either, it's common sense and even

the Rangers carry it religiously, but the NPS stats don't live up to the hype. Glacier NP tops the list at 11 deaths in 110 years; Yellowstone second w/ 8 deaths in its ~145 history with 100M visitors a year. Yellowstone gets more press (and fear) because the publicized 2015 partial consumption. And those numbers include the silly 1970s when NPS and guides were feeding the bears from cars and to make them part of the tourism draw.

I don't know if the guide was just trying to make the trip more excitable and telling ghost stories, but at least on official park property reports, Glacier, Yellowstone, and Banff/Jasper (Canada) each only average about 1 bear attack per year. Not that you want to be that one obviously. :)

Not that there weren't anxious moments as we hiked directly through huge berry patches in Banff and Glacier just before hibernation season. But like most scary things, grizzlies haunt your nights but are less likely to harm you than the mundane things (lighting, avalanche, or just plan falling, all common killers in the parks).
