It's unusual if that's what you're looking for

Just going by his dad's own words, he's basically saying that his son was looking for several things specifically: Football, winning, and being a college student, and to have fun doing all of them.

Objectively, he was getting football. I don't know is specifically meant by the "being a college student" aspect, so I won't speculate as to if that was a driving factor to his transfer. I don't know what the coaches expect the players to do in their down time, though if the previous kicker's removal from the team is any indication, it's limited to legal stuff. Again, I have no idea on this point, and I'm assuming others on here can comment on whether players still hang out at Boylan on the weekends and such.

Now it's the combination of winning, and having fun doing it. Well, UVa wasn't a winner at all, and judging by the winter workout videos, it doesn't look very fun. So the combination of high intensity workouts and not having seen results on the field can be demoralizing. If this really comes down to "I'm up every morning at 0500, working my ass off at 0600, not enjoying doing any of that, and I still don't have confidence we'll win" then yeah, that guy probably isn't a very good fit for the team, and it's probably in everyone's best interest to part ways.

No one is happy with that result, but does it mean the player needs to change who he is? No. Does it mean the coaches need to totally revamp their off season plan? No. It's just not a fit, and it's likely that that's what this is.

Doesn't seem unusual, and it's something I'm not going to set my hair on fire over. Rebuilding a program is not fun. Morning workouts aren't fun. High intensity workouts aren't fun. It is what it is.
