The "mental part"

There have been a number of posts on this site alluding to the need for improved defense and goalie play as well as the team's needing to learn the System. My take is that those issues, while very important, are secondary to the players needing to "learn" the true costs of poor decision-making and sloppiness.
In a number of interviews, players have universally described the fun that they experienced playing in the System. They invariably emphasize the fact that Coach Tiffany is not "overly critical" when they make a mistake. While I believe that that lack of criticism for mistakes has caused the majority of the problems occurring in the last few games, I believe Coach Tiffany's decision vis-à-vis criticism was pure genius and will lead to the System self-correcting in the near term.
The wisdom of Coach Tiffany's strategy is that coaching the team to go full bore, uninhibited by fear of "criticism," allowed the players to discover their maximum capabilities. It afforded them the opportunity to play lacrosse, uninhibited by self-doubt and without the pressure of looking over their shoulder for their replacement if they make a mistake (as players all too often do in strictly regimented and ridged systems.). During fall and winter practice and the first three games, playing full bore, there was no penalty for sloppiness or trying to do too much. It was, in fact, encouraged.
The self-correction will inevitably come as those players individually, and the team as a whole, experience the sting of those three losses whose cause they undoubtedly, by now, recognize. (Close losses caused by mistakes have a way of doing that.) The pace will remain frenetic but as intelligent young men, they will begin to ration their risk taking accordingly. Situational awareness will improve, errors and sloppiness will be reduced and the results will reflect it. The Coach is putting the future of the team in its own hands. I have a very good feeling about the outcome!
