I think you hit the nail on the head - coach is building for the long haul

the first thing he had to do was tear down the fear that has been built into today's players regarding the ball control style of play that has dominated lately. In that (Tierney style) offense, every single possession is vital, and the coach was going to come down on you hard for making a bone-headed play and turning over the ball.

Lars seems to know that his players need to learn how to be comfortable playing loose. It sounds so weird to me to say it, but when I coach younger kids I see it. The fear of failure and expectation of having everything scripted by an "adult" is a challenge for many of the current college generation.

They actually have to learn how to handle freedom, and mistakes, etc. that are going to be the key to running this style of play in the long run.

SELF regulated, rather than orchestrated. Each player has to learn where his personal edge is..

gotta say I am LOVING watching these guys play, even the losses are at least fun lacrosse.
